Interlibrary Loan
Interlibrary loan is a service that allows students to request materials from other libraries. Journal articles, book chapters, or physical books that are not available within the SJNY Online Library collection may be requested. Journal articles and book chapters are usually sent electronically. Physical books are shipped to the student.
The library uses the Tipasa system to request items from other libraries.
Receiving and Returning Physical Materials
Fulfilled Interlibrary Loan requests will be shipped to the address that was entered into Tipasa. The SJNY Online Library will pay for the cost of shipping to the student, and the SJNY Online student must pay for the cost of the return shipping to the SJC Online Library. The shipping method used must be traceable. When receiving a book, carefully open the packaging so that it can reused for the return shipment. The return address label will be provided.
Note that the due date does not take into account shipping times, so please plan accordingly.
Interlibrary loan borrowing periods are determined by the lending library. Note that the borrowing period does not take into account shipping times.
After an item is overdue for 30 days, a warning letter is sent out and the patron's record is blocked. If the book is not returned, it's cost and any applicable fees will be the responsibility of the patron.
It is often difficult and is some cases impossible to borrow certain kinds of library materials, since most libraries either do not own or do not lend such items.
Items that are difficult or impossible to borrow include: rare books, manuscripts, reference books, books about genealogy, audiovisual material, entire issues of periodicals, scholarly books published during the current year or in some cases the previous year, thesis, dissertations and new textbooks.
Notice: Warning Concerning Copyright Restrictions:
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for purposes other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement.
St. Joseph's University, NY reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
