What material does the 3D printer use?
Our MakerBot 5th Generation 3D printer uses PLA (Polylactic Acid) Filament. PLA is a biodegradable thermoplastic which is derived from renewable resources, such as cornstarch, sugar cane, tapioca roots or even potato starch. MakerBot PLA Filament is a nontoxic resin made of sugar derived from field corn and has a semisweet smell when heated.
How big of an object can you 3D print or scan?
The MakerBot Replicator's maximum printing dimensions are 9.9L x 7.8W x 5.9H inches.
The MakerBot Digitizer’s maximum scanning dimensions are 8 x 8 in.
Can I operate the printer and scanner myself?
The 3D printer and scanner will only be operated directly by staff right now. If you are interested in seeing the 3D printer or scanner in action, please contact a staff member for a demonstration.
How do I get my file printed?
To print a model, please bring your file (in .STL or .MAKERBOT file format) to the Copy Center during your previously arranged meeting time. We’ll help you, estimate how much it will cost, and estimate how long it will take to print your model. We'll add your model to our printing queue and you can pay when you pick it up.
Is there a charge for printing my item?
Printing fees are charged to cover costs of materials and staff time involved with creating the 3D object. Please refer to the Print Requests tab for pricing guidelines.
Can I schedule a printing consultation?
Yes! Email us at Callahan3DPrinting@gmail.com to set up an individual information session or printing consultation. We will add your model to the printing queue and you will be notified when it is ready for pick up.
How long will it take to print my object?
An estimated cost will be emailed to you for approval before the print will be initiated. 3D items will not be printed without student acknowledgement of the cost involved. All print requests will be added to a queue and will be printed in the order in which they were received.
While our goal is 2-3 business days, library staff will print all projects as quickly as possible based on staff time and availability. You will be notified when your object has been printed and is ready for pickup. The Library makes no commitment to being able to produce print submissions in a specific timeframe.
Please note, projects submitted for a course assignment will have priority in the printing schedule once the assignment has been confirmed with the faculty member.
How many objects can I request a time?
You can submit one item request at a time. A single item having multiple parts or files will be considered one item with printing fees charged for each file. If you have interest in multiple items, please submit one item per request.
