SJC Coat of Arms

The SJC Coat of Arms is shown here in the center of the College seal. According to the letters (See DOC B21 F4 #2) written by Pierre de Chaignon la Rose addressed to Reverend Sister Augustine Mary Early (See DOC B5 F1) in 1929, SJC Coat of Arms was designed by Pierre de Chaignon la Rose. "Pierre de Chaignon la Rose (1872-1941) was a prominent 20th Century ecclesiastical heraldic artist from Harvard.  He designed a number of arms for Catholic schools and universities in the US." (Chat M. Krouse, M.Div., personal communication). (See Report - Harvard University 1895).

The Board of Trustees meeting minutes on June 10, 1929 states "Dr. Dillon   presented a new college seal and moved 'That the seal as here presented should be adopted.' Carried."  The oldest document in the Archives with this coat of arms is the cover of the 1929-1930 catalog.

Pre-1929 documents show the seal on the left with the term "ITE AD JOSEPH" ("Go to Joseph" in Latin).
